Vedic Lifesciences Research Program – Diabetes
Mellitus and Clinical Trials for 3 Herbal Formulations Type 2 Diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), or adult-onset diabetes) is a disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency.1 This is a serious disease affecting approximately 4.0% of adults in the world in 1995 and this prevalence has been projected to rise to 5.4% by 2025. This increase is occurring to a disproportionate extent in the developing countries, especially those of Asia. The worldwide increase in the prevalence of diabetes has been accompanied by a three to fourfold increase in the incidence of ESRD (End Stage Renal Disorder) making diabetes the single leading cause of ESRD in most countries. 2 An event in the making! - An India based novel R & D Company has outsourced clinical research on 3 of its herbal formulations for Type ll Diabetes Mellitus to Vedic Lifesciences. The Sponsor, a visionary in its own right, has been adept at recognizing the unmet medical needs of key therapeutic areas. Championing the need to provide an easier access to good health, it has worked diligently in providing products to meet these challenges in the Dietary Supplement arena. Vedic Lifesciences’ prior association with this company and the successful legacy of its earlier trials has been a strong reason for undertaking this particular Research program. Vedic Lifesciences recently organized a well attended Investigator Meet in the bustling city of Pune. This was done to introduce the scope of the study to the Investigators. The study has a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled and factorial design. The Investigators who were finalized for this study were found to be passionate about contributing to research. Dedication in their area of expertise and a renewed enthusiasm to furthur knowledge in the same has been a core professional interest for all of them. Vedic believes that, given the track record of this sponsor in formulating science based research intensive successful healthcare brands, the results of this study too will provide positive outcomes which would be of great benefit to people afflicted by this ailment. The study investigators were also trained on the conduct of the overall trial in accordance to ICH – GCP principles before they took over the responsibility of conducting the trial at their respective sites. Investigators have assured Vedic Lifesciences of recruiting the required number of patients within the set timelines. The investigators were encouraged to prescreen their subjects & prepare a database of the subjects likely to satisfy the recruitment criteria. This would help in faster recruitment when the study commences. Highly accomplished in their field the investigators were very keen to associate themselves with Vedic for this study and the trusted brand equity it carries. The study shall commence shortly…….
